Foods to Boost Mood

Adrenal Exhaustion

Busy, demanding lifestyles, coupled with a diet high in processed foods can lead to adrenal exhaustion.

This is a syndrome where the adrenal glands, (which are heavily involved in the stress response), start to function at lower levels than are required by the body to fight stress and stay energised for consistent periods of time.

Adrenal exhaustion is commonly seen in people who work long hours. They then take a holiday and find themselves in bed with the flu for two weeks. Foods that boost mood are crucial to sustaining healthy eating and combating the impact of stress on the body, helping to stave off the propensity to adrenal exhaustion.

Omega 3 Fish Oils

Essentials fatty acids

Research consistently reports that omega 3 essential fatty acids help to:

  • Ward off depression
  • Balance mood
  • Reduce inflammation in tissues
  • Boost memory and learning

Your body cannot produce essential fatty acids so you must get them from your diet. Vegetarians can get them from sunflower and sesame seeds, avocados and nuts.

Antioxidants

Fruit and vegetables for supreme health

  • Antioxidants fight cancer
  • Antioxidants combat free radicals
  • Antioxidants may reduce memory loss

The health claims for antioxidant foods can seem staggering, but scientists, doctors and nutritionists all agree that they can be classed as ‘Superfoods’.

Antioxidants help to boost mood by protecting the brain from free radical damage and thus help to sustain memory and, in the long run, mood.

Colourful fruits and vegetables are high in antioxidants, vitamins and coloured minerals. We need to eat a wide range of different fruits and vegetables to enable them to help boost our mood. Although this sounds easy, many of us shop habitually, buying the same foods each week and can get into a food rut.
